img_1899Dan Chiras received his Ph.D. in reproductive physiology from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1976. Since then, he has taught at numerous colleges and universities, including The University of Colorado in Denver, the University of Denver, the University of Colorado in Boulder, the University of Washington, and Colorado College. He currently teaches part time through the Sustainable Living Department at Maharishi University in Fairfield, Iowa. Dan teaches courses on ecological design and renewable energy.

Dan is founder and lead instructor at The Evergreen Institute’s Center for Renewable Energy and Green Building in Gerald, MO (evergreeninstitute.org). He teaches courses on solar electricity, wind energy, passive solar heating and cooling, solar hot water, natural building, energy conservation, natural plasters, green building, and net zero energy building.

Dan has published close to 400 blogs and articles in a variety of publications including Home Power, Solar Today, and Mother Earth News. He has also published 35 books including his best-selling titles, Power from the Sun, The Solar House, The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, and The Natural House. Dan has also published several college textbooks, including Environmental Science, Natural Resource Conservation, Human Body Systems, and Human Biology.

Dan’s three newest books are High-Performance, Off-Grid Chinese Greenhouses, Things I Learned too Late in Life and Opt Out: Achieving Total Self-Sufficiency.  Dan also recently co-produced a DVD on Off-Grid Aquaponics in conjunction with The Aquaponics Source.

Dan and his partner Linda raise grass-fed beef, free-range chickens and ducks, and organic vegetables which they market locally. Their home, The Evergreen Institute, and the farm are all powered 100% by solar electricity, wind energy, and solar hot water. In 2013, Dan built a passive-solar, net zero energy home on the farm to replace their home that burned to the ground in a fire.

Dan is an avid reader and musician. He plays multiple instruments including the guitar, flute, saxophone, ukulele, harmonica, six-string banjo, and mountain dulcimer. Dan has written numerous songs that he is currently trying to publish.
